How to make money as a proofreader?

One way to be an online earner as a proofreader is by first sharpening your abilities. Hone your precision, grammar, and knowledge of different writing styles. Then, present a portfolio that can be seen as the testimony of your ability to have good bug-tracking skills and to correct/clarify the text. You may either present your services on freelancing platforms like Upwork and Fiverr, where your potential clients are looking for skilled proofreaders, or you could alternatively directly connect with bloggers, authors, or businesses to offer your proofreading skills. Set your focus in a particular area, such as academic writing, web content, business documents, etc., so that your skills will be in high demand. Get yourself introduced to online communities that are closest to your work area and take part in forums that are mainly for writing, publishing, and content creation, all of these are potential clients. It is essential to set affordable prices while gaining knowledge and experience; later on, you can raise your rates as you make a name for yourself. Providing clients with high-quality work and delivering the projects within deadlines without any delay is the key to forging long-term relationships. It is these relationships that result in them becoming repeat customers and referring your business to others. One more thing: keeping your occupation as a proofreader as part-time makes it quite flexible and at the same time, earns you more money. After you have spent some time in the industry, moving on to editing services will enable you to have increased earning opportunities.

My experience with Fiverr proofreaders has been mixed. One of the things I recommend to my clients is that they ask for a second, third, and sometimes even a fourth copy edit from different people. This greatly increases the chances that you'll get one that is acceptable. It can definitely be frustrating when it seems like every request we make is met with nearly unanimous complaints, but given the low costs involved, there are plenty of other edits available on Fiverr if you want them.

It's important not to approve your order yourself or simply mark it as complete when someone asks for feedback because this will result in paying for an unsatisfactory product so either outright denies it or keep asking about changes until you're happy with their answers. You can cancel the proofread if you wish, but if you've already paid for it it isn't necessary.

I have had proofreaders work on essays and papers that were very well proofed in general, but missed one big mistake that would change a whole sentence or paragraph's meaning. I find this happens with my proofreader most often when there are many changes made to an essay. In those cases, proofreaders may not be able to catch every alteration because they're just glancing through the paper too quickly.
