I've frequently pondered what life might be like if artificial intelligence replaces humans in the majority of our current jobs. I was both excited and afraid when I first began using AI tools to automate some of my work. I was excited because it gave me more freedom to connect, think, and create. However, the fear was rooted in a deeper question: what should we do if machines are capable of doing everything?
I came to see that meaning is more important than busyness when it comes to purpose. Routine tasks will be replaced by AI, freeing up human time to focus on more important things. Consider this: we might finally be able to pursue our passions, such as making art, addressing social issues, mentoring, or simply being better parents and neighbors, if we are not under the pressure to earn money in order to survive.
In my own life, I discovered that I had more time to think creatively and organize worthwhile projects when AI took care of tasks like scheduling, writing simple emails, and even some content creation. I felt a new sense of purpose after that change—not just to work, but to make a difference.
I believe that as a society, we will begin to place a greater value on human connection, creativity, and emotional intelligence. Since AI can't fully replicate empathy, care, philosophy, and the arts, we may see an increase in new roles in these areas. Perhaps that's the secret: in a world where everything is automated, our humanity becomes our greatest strength.
Purpose won’t disappear in an AI-driven future — it will just evolve. We’ll move from doing to being. And that might just be the most meaningful shift of all.
