⍰ ASK What tools would I need to build a brick wall?

part from knowing how too the essentials are: a 12 inch pointed trowel , a 4 inch pointing trowel , a 2 or 4 inch block chisel , a tape measure, or foldable rule , a lump hammer , a 4ft minimum spirit level to get corners both vertical and horizontal over as long as distance as possible , a set of line pins and line , a builders square , ideally 3ft x4ft and 5ft , this gives you a square corner over a reasonable distance . You can make your own to those dimensions from 2x1 inch timber and screwed together , a brick jointing tool or one made from a galvanised bucket handle , a mortar board ideally made from exterior ply and a plasterers hawk , this is ideal for holding mortar whilst pointing .

Optional extras would be a 4 inch grinder and diamond blade and a laser level that will give you a perfect 90° angle as well as horizontal and vertical . There are also other gadgets available to get your mortar perfectly flat and consistant thickness , but if you are learning the trade properly then it is better to learn to do this by eye .

While starting out remember don't be impatient and want to lay them quickly , check each brick in the corners with your level for vertical and horizontal and squareness , check your rows are rising at the proper distance, ensure your bricks break joints by 50 % . During infil keep your line as tight as possible this prevents humps or sags in your rows as well as straight . Speed comes with practice and experience .
