Changing the accounting reference date for a UK company is doable, but there are some rules to follow. The accounting reference date is like the finish line for a company's financial year.
If you want to make the accounting period longer, you gotta ask Companies House for the thumbs-up before the current accounting reference date ends. But if you want to make it shorter, no need for their approval. Just give Companies House a headsup within the set timeframe.
You can't stretch out your accounting period more than once in five years. And public companies and those with subsidiary undertakings can't cut short their accounting reference date.
