Do you use cheques to receive money online?

Cheques are still one of the most trustworthy and secure methods of receiving earnings through the internet. This is specifically true for those concerned individuals, who are looking for transparency, oversight, and less reliance on the quick-changing digital platforms. Unlike a considerable number of online payment systems, which are not only capable of and open to the imposition of concealed and/or extra charges but can also freeze one’s account without even giving any notice and frequently require a lot of personal verification to restore it, cheques guarantee a direct and physical mode of payment that can be banked or cashed at the receiver's discretion. There is no fear of illegal access by hackers as it often happens with online wallets and payment gateways. Moreover, cheques provide a clear paper trail that is indispensable for the self-employed, small business owners, and remote workers who sometimes need evidence for tax or legal matters. For people who live in places where there is limited internet security or infrastructure of digital banking, cheques are the most suitable way as they are independent of mobile apps and always online connectivity. Also, they help to establish a degree of trust between actor and recipient as the former party must perform a real, determined physical action to transfer funds and this is often the cause of fewer disputes or errors in the transaction. In cases where digital censorship or financial restrictions may be practiced, receiving funds in the form of a cheque is a way to avoid the systems that are packed with surveillance or that may be affected by propaganda. With the way the digital world is going, it is increasingly hard to be financially independent. The traditional methods like cheques are the true saviors since they are not only a source of a digital income but also are an indirect way to bring about a change as they will help to centralize the income in the hands of the owner.

Cheques. Yeah, those things your grandma probably still insists on using at the grocery store. Feels like everyone’s moved on to shiny apps, crypto buzz, or just zapping money straight from their phone, right? And yet, here’s the thing: cheques aren’t dead. In fact, they’re kinda stubborn—like that one old sweater you can’t part with because it just works when you need it.

There’s something about actually holding money in your hands—or okay, holding a promise of money, scribbled on a bit of paper. Digital payments are easy to miss, easy to fudge, and don’t give you that “hey, look at me, I got paid!” moment. With cheques, it’s different. You get a real, physical record and, honestly, a sense of satisfaction when you snap that photo for deposit or schlep it down to the bank (if, you know, you can find one still open around you).

Now, if you’re freelancing, running your own gig, or just hustling, that paper trail? Chef’s kiss. You never know when you’ll need to wave proof of income at a skeptical landlord or the taxman. And, when push comes to shove, having actual documents—rather than digital ghost money—makes a real difference in legal drama or financial wrangling.

Let’s talk “security”—don’t laugh—and all the ways digital stuff can go sideways. Your PayPal gets frozen, some dopey exchange suddenly changes their rules, a hacker gets bored and decides to ruin your day… Stuff happens, especially online. A cheque? Gotta say, nobody’s hacking that envelope while it’s in your mailbox. Sucker’s offline and old-school, and there’s a weird comfort in that.

And if you happen to live somewhere with sketchy internet, lots of government snooping, or wild currency rules, digital payment isn’t always your friend. Cheques are stubbornly analog—they fly under some radars, and give you control when Big Brother’s feeling nosy. You get your dough, no crypto-wallet drama or bank algorithm shutting you down on a whim.

Yes, yes. Cheques are slow. Sometimes painfully so. You could probably fly to Paris and back before your international bank cheque clears. Plus, more banks are ditching cheque services because everyone’s glued to their phone. And don’t get me started on cross-border cheques—the fees, delays, all the nonsense. Not exactly “future of payments” material.

But I’ll say this: there’s a kind of trust to cheques that apps can’t match. When someone takes the time to write you a cheque, mail it, and sign their name—that’s no casual transaction. There’s intent, and permanence, and you don’t have to worry a robot’s gonna freeze your cash because you bought too many concert tickets.

Maybe the real move is to mix it up—use whatever digital app rules the day when you want speed, but don’t be afraid to bust out a cheque when you want real-world proof, privacy, and a little old-school security. Especially now, when banks and governments seem obsessed with tracking every penny we touch. Sometimes, the analog option is actually your secret weapon.

So yeah, next time someone offers to pay by cheque, don’t just roll your eyes. Sometimes, old school is just... school.
