How can a businessman find mentor?

Finding the right kind of mentors could be a really big challenge for many businesses. I was alo running a business a few years ago, and I never had any kind of idea about running a business. Having said that, things aren't that easy for many bsiinessmen and there could be cases where many popular businessmen may also need mentorship. We must try to understand that even many popular businessmen may also need opinions and guidance related to business. This is one of the main reasons why so many businessmen also seek mentouship. So, what is the best way to find a mentou? I think that businessmen could join mentouship programs. There are many such kind of programs that are available online. I also believe that a business mean could also join a community as well. These communities can help a businessmen interact with other businessmen and seek guidance and even mentorship from others. A businessman could also join international forums and groups where they may find a professional mentorship for themselves. There are clearly various benefits of having a mentor and this is something many people should know. So, what are some other ways a businessman could find a mentor? Do you think that a businessman should travel to other countries to find a mentor? What do you think?

Slightly longer answer: Whatever field you want to enter, business or otherwise, you are going to need someone to guide you. Entering a new field, doing something you’ve never done before, is like walking into a super-crowded and dark basement, with your eyes covered. You’re going to need someone to take your hand and guide you to where you want to go, so you don’t stumble around, bump into things and people, and hurt yourself.

Now business, is a very vast field and it is always changing and adapting. Just look at how the field has changed in 2024 alone, when most businesses and consumers have moved online? Business owners have had to find new ways of advertising, creating their products, and satisfying the customers. And someone who has just gotten into the field will have a much harder time navigating it and succeeding without “a more knowledgeable other,” a.k.a a mentor.

My recommendation is to narrow down the what you wish to do, and go out to look for people who will mentor you.

In my experience, mentoring can make all the difference in a business, especially when you're just getting started. I made many preventable mistakes when I first started my business because I had no idea what I was doing. Joining startup forums and online communities where seasoned business owners were ready to share their knowledge was what really helped me. I also signed up for a virtual mentorship program, and the one-on-one advice I received helped me to clarify things. Finding a great mentor doesn't always require traveling overseas; sometimes, all it takes is a Zoom call. For me, it all came down to actively seeking connections and keeping an open mind. More than any book or course, a good mentor can accelerate your growth.

According to my experience, finding a perfect business mentor requires going beyond the mere fact of selecting a person who is successful, but rather alignment, experience, and genuine interest in your growth. It is important to find a mentor whose experience is the same as your target, who understands the field of your business and has solved problems similar to yours. The key to success is rapport; effective mentorship needs honest communication and trust.

Go to networking events, business meetups, or join entrepreneur groups to meet potential mentors in a natural way. Clearly state what you want: support, response, acquaintances. Being prepared and coachable means you are respecting their time. A perfectly fitting mentor will not provide you with all the solutions; however, they will question you, challenge your thinking, and be with you in the process of development with clarity and accountability. Choose carefully - it’s a relationship, not just a deal.

I found mine by seeking out people who were doing what I wanted to do. Most people who are passionate about what they do will take time to give you some advice that will help you. It doesn’t hurt to check out someone who wasn’t that successful in a particular venture. When I became a consultant, it was my job to find out what was going on. My clients were often people who didn’t have a clue - that’s why they were failing. As a business broker, I did some of the same things and ended up buying one who just wanted to get out. I am still running it almost twenty years later.

For the last ten years, I have been mentoring start-ups and ongoing businesses. Big difference, but people who haven’t been business need to know what they are facing down the road. There are many that I have talked out of starting because they didn’t have the “fire in the belly” needed to stay the course.
